Deaf Man Adopts Deaf Rescue Puppy And Teaches Him Sign Language

31 year old Nick Abbot is a deaf man. Some time ago Nick was checking his Facebook page when suddenly he came across Emerson – a 12 years old deaf puppy- on NFR Maine’s Facebook page, a local animal shelter in his state.

“I said ‘Oh, he’s deaf too,’” the 31-year-old told WABI-TV late last month. “Maybe I can go check him out to see what he’s all about.”

The adorable black Lub mix was rescued and brought to North Florida Rescue of Maine. The little pup got an infection and was suffering from seizures, he needed to be hospitalized for some time however when he recovered he was able to be up for adoption.

“Emerson is still looking for his forever home,” NFR Maine’s Lindsay Powers said on Facebook in March. “Please keep sharing, this sweet boy deserves his own forever home!”

Abbot send an application about Emerson so a meeting was set up for them to meet each other!

“He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there,” Abbott explained to the news station. “So you can tell he kind of picked me. And I knew right then and there that we would get along and understand each other pretty good.”

Emerson has now found a lovely home near his beloved Abbot. They have a very special bond with each other since they are both facing the same issue. Abbot is now teaching little Emerson to respond to visual commands, something like sign language.

Abbott said the dog understands visual commands of “sit, come here” and “lie down.”

“The bond that we have is awesome,” Abbott told  WABI-TV.“We understand each other very well. I’d like to think it was meant to be. He’s special.”
