Astonishing Birth of Rare Horse with “Medicine Hat” Markings Leaves Ranchers in Awe

Recently, Jackie and Scott Nelson—proud proprietors of Melbourne, Florida’s well-known riding property “Down Under Colour”—were given an amazing piece of good fortune. They were in the business of producing beautiful paint horses, so they were shocked when one of their young fillies, Coconut, came into the world with incredibly beautiful markings that had deep cultural meaning.

As it happens, Coconut was a so-called “war horse,” and the fascinating background of these animals is very fascinating. Native American mythology, especially that of the Plains, frequently alludes to the highly esteemed Medicine Man. The Medicine Man was a traditional healer and spiritual guide for Native American tribes. His vast knowledge of healing techniques and holy rites enabled them to provide care and healing to the people in their society.

Why were war horses and the Medicine Man so intimately related, and how did he use their healing abilities? The Medicine Man used proper phrases, incantations, items, dances, and rituals to protect men from demons; their job was to ward off bad spirits and serve as protectors for common people, according to Britannica.

With regional and tribal variances in shamanic beliefs, the duties of Medicine Men differed between tribes. However, there were a few duties that all Medicine Men had in common. They were mystics, teachers, prophets, healers, and communicators.

A recurrent element in Native American history is the close bond between Medicine Men and war horses. Medicine Men rode only a certain kind of horse called the war horse, and it is said that they had a special relationship with animals. With the exception of a little area covering their ears and heads, these horses were completely white. The most distinguishing characteristic of these remarkable horses was their distinctive marking, which became known as a “War Bonnet” or “Medicine Hat.”

War horses were also distinguished by the possession of a single blue eye, known as a “Sky Eye” in mythology. In the event that the Medicine Man died in battle, it was thought that this blue eye would return his spirit to the Gods. Essentially, the war horse served as the Medicine Man’s protective comrade, keeping them safe on the battlefield and alerting others to impending threats.

Realizing Coconut was unique, Jackie and Scott uploaded a video of her on YouTube and invited others to see how beautiful she was. Viewers quickly expressed their wonder and respect for the magnificent horse.
